Department of State Restricts Waivers of Nonimmigrant Interviews

Effective August 1, 2003 the Department of State has restricted the waivers of nonimmigrant interviews in an effort to ensure more adequately the security and integrity of nonimmigrant visa application and issuance procedures. Personal interviews will now be required for the issuance of many nonimmigrant visa stamps that were exempt in the past. Consular officials may still waive the interview requirement for children under 16 and persons age 60 or older and for individuals applying for a reissuance of a nonimmigrant visa in the same classification at the consular post of the alien's usual residence. This restriction will most certainly delay the issuance of visa stamps. Plan accordingly with respect to new hires and your own travel plans if they include a visa stamp issuance or renewal.
