Program: NIH Director's Early Independence Awards (DP5)

Program Description

To appoint and support exceptional, early career scientists directly following the completion of their Ph.D. (or equivalent) or M.D. (or equivalent) training into an independent academic research position, thereby omitting the traditional post-doctoral training period from their career path.


Eligibility

At the time of application, the Early Independence PI must be within 12 months before or after the completion of their Ph.D. (or equivalent) or M.D. (or equivalent) training. There are no citizenship requirements.

Awards
An award of $250,000/year for 5 years will be provided. Two candidates may be nominated per institution.

Instructions for University Nominating Committee Submission
The following materials should be submitted to Frances Yee:

   1. Letter of nomination from HOL, and two additional letters of recommendation
   2. Current curriculum vitae including the nominee’s date of birth, citizenship status, the full date (m/d/y) of degrees received
   3. Current and pending support
   4. A 4-5 page summary of the research proposed
   5. All items, other than the letters of recommendation, should be submitted as a single pdf document

A committee of HOLs appointed by the Academic Council will review applications. Those passing the first review will be given the opportunity to present their ideas in a seminar or chalk talk. Selection for DP5 submission will be made via this process and successful applicants will be notified by the end of the calendar year, in time to prepare their full application for the January 29, 2016 deadline.
