In keeping with the recommendation of the Working Group of the Advisory Committee to the NIH Director, The Rockefeller University encourages Individual Development Plans (IDPs) to help manage the career development of students and postdocs associated with NIH awards. The Rockefeller University recommends using the myIDP web-based tool housed on the Science Careers website: http://myidp.sciencecareers.org/.  This tool serves as a resource for thinking about and establishing career plans, and can be used as a launching point for students and postdocs to discuss these plans with an adviser or other mentors.  Beginning October 1, 2014, it is recommended that postdocs appointed to NIH grants complete an online IDP. The IDPs are meant to complement the existing training approach that emphasizes goal setting, specific milestones and weekly meetings.  Other senior laboratory members [provide names, if possible] guide the trainees on a daily basis, supporting, teaching and providing training in new techniques and methods. Trainees grow professionally through active participation in laboratory efforts, on- and off-campus meetings, presentations of findings, and co-authorship of papers.
