Spotlight on SR-PD's Program Development

December 2013

SR-PD’s Program Development (PD) team supports the submission of large-scale multi-PI/multi institutional funding applications along with other efforts. We offer services and resources to assist researchers at all levels by providing grant writing tools and boilerplates, helping with institutional letters of support, coordinating the University’s limited submission process, interpreting sponsored research policies and regulations, and advising on resubmission options and strategies. Working closely with new Heads of Laboratory when they first join the university, we guide them and their laboratory members in navigating the sponsored research funding universe.  Resources and career development opportunities for junior investigators are continually created and maintained on our Training & Fellowships page.

Identifying relevant sponsored research resources from federal, state, and private funders is a key PD tool towards increasing the number of RU funding applications and diversifying the RU funding portfolio.  We search for domestic and international funding opportunities and match them with investigators’ areas of interest, using a wide range of sources. The resulting data is distributed to all RU investigators and research administrators via our weekly funding alerts and our funding database.   Our regular outreach services feature specialized grant writing tutorials for laboratories, as well as grant tutorials tailored for our Clinical Scholars, postdoctoral researchers and graduate students. PD offers further training to researchers and administrators in a variety of sponsored research areas, such as research compliance, open access policies, and more via our Tri-Institutional Collaboration Network (TCN).

During calendar years 2010-2012 University investigators were awarded 102 collaborative/multi-PI  grants & contracts, for a total of $155,276,339 (out of 297 collaborative/multi-PI submissions over this time span). Customized PD support of these projects encompassed a series of interrelated activities, from the initial preaward phase and sustained through the post submission phase.  PD provides an overall coordination of the application process, e.g. application checklists and timelines, budget development, interactions with subcontract applicants, review of administrative components, as well as other components as requested by PIs, following up with sponsors, and advice on the review process, outcomes, and resubmission options.

Significant funding opportunities coming up are posted in our Selected Deadlines section of our homepage and include an NIH Program Project for Specialized Programs of Research Excellence in Human Cancer and an NSF Collaborative Research in Computational Neuroscience (CRCNS). Our PD team, consisting of Frances Yee, Coordinator of Research Programs, and Kate Ross, Manager of Outreach & Training, partners with other SR-PD areas in working together with investigators and administrators.

Come visit SR-PD online and offline and let us help you to pursue sponsored research funding to enable your work.
