Facilities and Resources

Our boilerplates and sample text for selected application sections may be used as a starting point for your applications, and should be modified to meet sponsor's requirements and to align with your proposed research plan.

Begin with a description of the resources (e.g. laboratory space, office space, University Resource Centers, large equipment) available to conduct the research project and include any of the sections below that are relevant to your proposal. If the proposed research involves any biohazardous agents, then a description of the special facilities that will be used for working with biohazards and any potentially dangerous substances should be included.

While these templates are NIH-centered, they may be modified for non-NIH applications and should be responsive to the sponsor's requirements. Non-NIH sponsor-specific boilerplates will be added as needed.

Effective for NIH application deadlines on/after January 25, 2010 (NOT-OD-09-149), the Resources section should include descriptions of the facilities to be used and of how the scientific environment will contribute to the probability of success of the project, unique features of the environment, and for Early Stage Investigators, the institutional investment in the success of the investigators (e.g. resources, classes, etc.)
____________________

The research proposed will benefit greatly from the scientific environment at Rockefeller University.  Laboratories here conduct both basic and clinical research, and study a diverse range of biological and biomedical problems, including cutting edge research on [research area of interest in funding announcement].  The open structure encourages collaboration between disciplines and empowers investigators to take on high-risk, high-reward projects [can include table of collaborators' grant information]. Laboratory members will participate in weekly lab meetings and journal clubs with [mention other labs if applicable], as well as a wealth of lectures, seminars and courses, all of which provide opportunities for interdisciplinary discussion and ideas.  PIs are given resources, support and unparalleled freedom to follow the science wherever it leads.  In addition to the immediate resources within Dr. [      ]'s laboratory, personnel involved will also benefit from the use of [list resource centers] nearby on campus and within the Tri-Institutional community with Memorial Sloan Kettering and Weill Cornell Medicine.

Animals
Animal research proposed will utilize the Comparative Bioscience Center (CBC).  The CBC provides a comprehensive program of animal care in support of the university's in vivo research. The center is capable of maintaining a variety of common and unique laboratory animals in addition to providing a wide range of veterinary, diagnostic (serology, bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, and pathology) and technical research services. An on-going series of training events is scheduled throughout the year to introduce investigators to the facility and provide them with up-to-date information on technical procedures and mandatory orientation is required for all personnel entering or using the CBC facility. The center is fully accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International and houses the Gene Targeting Facility and the Transgenic Services Laboratory.

Human Subjects
Studies involving human subjects will be conducted in the University Hospital, which is accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC) and licensed by the State of New York.  This facility is devoted solely to patient-oriented research and has been since its founding in 1910. The specialized personnel and resources facilitate clinical research for both the investigator and the research participant. The facilities include a 20-bed inpatient unit which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The RU human research protection program was accredited in March, 2011 by the Association of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP). The Robert and & Harriet Heilbrunn Outpatient Research Center includes 8 exam rooms, 2 consultation rooms and 1 phlebotomy room, along with other patient and staff facilities and is open weekdays from 7am to 5pm. There is also a state-of-the-art digital radiology suite. There is also a specialized Research Bionutrition Department and an on-site Research Pharmacy. Full clinical laboratory services are provided via contract with Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; Radiology and EKG interpretations are provided by arrangement with New York-Presbyterian Hospital; and on-site apheresis services are provided by contract.

University Resource Centers
The study will take advantage of the following shared campus resources and facilities: [Bio-Imaging (Charges)], [Comparative Bioscience Center (Charges)], [Electron Microscopy (Charges)], [Flow Cytometry (Charges)], [Gene Targeting (Charges)], [Genomics (Charges)], [Proteomics (Charges)], [Spectroscopy (Charges)], [Structural Biology (Charges)], [Transgenic Services (Charges)], [Tri-Institutional Therapeutics Discovery Institute]. (Include only those Resource Centers that you propose to use.)

Early Stage Investigators
The University provides strong support for the research work of its junior faculty. In addition to state-of-the-art resource centers, Hospital and Comparative Bioscience Center, the PI is also provided with exceptional start-up support, which can be used for classes, training, and travel to conferences, as well as administrative support. The structure is unique in that it is not built around traditional academic departments and bureaucracy is kept to a minimum so that the PI can focus on their research.  Dr. [      ] is not required but is free to participate in teaching the graduate courses.  The PI's laboratory is near several other research groups/cores such as [        ], [       ], and [       ] and the physical proximity supports extensive joint efforts in both research and training. All laboratory members receive instruction and training in lab safety as well as care and use of animals and protection of human subjects training when required.  Graduate and postdoctoral trainees also receive instruction in the responsible conduct of research.  Investigators are encouraged to explore and search out their own niche.

NIH Postdoctoral Applicants
NIH Postdoctoral Applicants are encouraged to provide information on resources that are available at the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (or the equivalent).  See NOT-OD-14-137 for more information, and see RU's Mentoring & Training Plans boilerplate for sample language.
