NIH Administrative Supplements

Administrative supplements are a mechanism to provide additional funds to an existing grant or cooperative agreement to pay for efforts that fall within the scope of that award but were not anticipated at the time of the competing submission. Although procedures and funds will vary between NIH Institutes and Centers (guidelines listed below), Principal Investigators are encouraged to speak to their Program Official first before applying to discuss eligibility, need for the supplement, availability of funds and application procedures. Requests for administrative supplements are reviewed internally by NIH program staff and do not normally require peer review. (In contrast to competitive revisions, which are supplements for existing awards that are beyond the scope of the original project, are peer-reviewed.)

The following NIH Institute/Centers offer specific guidelines:
NIAID Revision and Administrative Supplements
NIMH
NINDS
NIEHS

Administrative Supplement program opportunities may be found by searching the OSPA Funding Database or the NIH Guide.
