High magnification transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a tantalum and tungsten surface replica of a critical point dried streptococcus within a chain of cells. This cell treatment produces projections on the cell surface. Loss of these surface projections by cell treatment with trypsin is consistent with their being comprised of cell surface proteins.
