Year-Off Training Program for Graduate or Medical Students in Clinical and Translational Science

The application process to the Year-Off Training Program for Graduate or Medical Students is closed.

The Year-off Training Program for Graduate and Medical Students provides opportunities for students who are enrolled in graduate or medical degree programs to engage in biomedical research at the Rockefeller Center for Clinical and Translational Science. Those selected for the program come to the Center with the understanding that they will return to their degree-granting institution and program within one year.

In an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research, trainees work under the supervision of some of the leading clinical and translational scientists in the world. The trainee can select from among the 75 different laboratories on the Rockefeller campus. In addition, trainees participate in the didactic programs and lectures developed for Clinical Scholars.

To be eligible to apply for this program, candidates must (1) be U.S. citizens, non-citizen US nationals, or permanent residents, (2) be enrolled in an accredited U.S. university or medical school, and (3) have permission from their institution to interrupt their education.

Stipend

The stipends for Year-off trainees are adjusted yearly. Housing is available on campus for most applicants at competitive rents. The stipend is paid on a bi-monthly basis.

Eligible Benefits for Students

Health insurance may be available for students whose home institution does not provide health insurance. Other benefits may also be available.

Application Procedures

Prospective applicants should apply by submitting a curriculum vitae, a list of the applicant's publications, a cover letter describing the applicant's research interests and career goals, and three letters of recommendation: 1) Dean of the applicant's academic institution, 2) Rockefeller University Head of Laboratory, and 3) either from a faculty member, mentor, or advisor. The dean's letter must certify that the applicant has permission to interrupt his/her studies for one year.

Selection

Applications are reviewed and selections are made by scientists in the Center on an on-going basis. Successful candidates will be required to submit the following documentation prior to beginning their training:

Taxes, Social Security, and Retirement

Stipends are subject to federal, state, and local income taxes, but there is no automatic tax withholding by the University from the stipend. In January the trainee receives a Form 1099 (rather than a W2) reporting earnings for the prior calendar year. Trainees may request withholding of taxes by the university. If they do not make this request, they should set aside funds to cover their income taxes and assess whether they are required to submit quarterly estimated tax returns. The Human Resources Department can help answer questions about benefits.
