2009 Summer News Bulletin

In the past six months, the Office of Sponsored Research and Program Development (SR-PD) was especially busy with efforts to capitalize on the exciting opportunities brought about by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), announced in February 2009.  This News Bulletin highlights some key accomplishments following the release of ARRA-related initiatives.

Since the ARRA implementation, SR-PD has been engaged in disseminating ARRA funding information from the NIH, NSF, and other agencies to investigators. In addition, we have been assisting researchers with identifying and submitting a record number of grant applications and supplement requests.  The SR-PD staff has created new boilerplates for ARRA requirements, streamlined compliance needs, and provided advice and guidance on programmatic issues.  Continuing updates on the 2009 ARRA funding are posted regularly on our website and include a new ARRA webpage, FAQs, summaries of ARRA funding programs, and more.

Since its inception last fall, the Tri-Institutional Collaboration Network (TCN) has hosted eight events as part of its monthly seminar series which will continue in the coming year.  In March, the partnership organized a special seminar dedicated to the ARRA efforts, bringing Tony DeCrappeo, President of the Council on Governmental Relations, and other speakers to the Rockefeller campus.  The TCN program for the 2009-10 academic year will open with Grant Writing Workshops for junior investigators.  We will also feature Dr. Harold Varmus later in the fall, and the series promises to be as busy and beneficial to our Tri-Institutional investigators and staff as in our first year.

As most applications to federal agencies are now submitted electronically, we continue to offer e-submission training and InfoEd guidance to investigators and staff.  In addition, we will implement a new routing process this summer in order to improve transparency of the e-submission process.

The 4th SR-PD ResAdmin forum was held on March 24th and issues discussed with our University research administrators included helpful hints for successful e-submission, clarification on NIH policies, and more.  Last week we had the 5th forum which featured a Markus Library presentation on the Public Access Policy, as well as updates on ARRA submissions and reporting requirements, and NIH Peer Review Process.

Kate Ross recently joined our Pre-Award area, in the position of Grants Management Specialist, and looks forward to working with you.

Our goals for the coming academic year include increasing the number of large scale collaborative grant submissions and awards; increasing sponsor diversity; working closely with HOLs and their laboratories; and further streamlining efforts to meet sponsors' requirements in order to maximize compliance and minimize burden on investigators.  We are also investigating new ideas to improve and broaden our services.

We encourage you to take advantage of our services and resources, and wish you a healthy and productive summer!
