2009 Winter News Bulletin

As we enter the New Year, Rockefeller University's Office of Sponsored Research and Program Development (SR-PD) continues to focus on daily research administration efforts, application submissions, improvement of services, and development of new resources. Our 3rd News Bulletin highlights some key accomplishments of the past six months and plans for the coming year.

A new R01 Checklist, released in September in response to investigators' requests, represents an important addition to the growing resources and tools on our website. It is designed to assist investigators and administrators in preparing their NIH R01 applications, as well as other NIH grant mechanisms (e.g. R21, R03, etc.). Our in-house funding database, which features easy access to research funding, was launched in September and offers seamless, one-stop-shop for funding opportunities relevant to the research performed on our campus.  Another major funding-seeking tool that we have made available to Rockefeller investigators in recent months is Community of Science (COS). A comprehensive web-based funding database with more than 25,000 records, COS contains almost 400,000 funding opportunities, worth over $33 billion.

We continue to work with InfoEd (University's online proposal management environment) to sustain the platform’s reliability and ease of use, as well as to enable better searching and reporting tools for researchers and administrators. With our campus IT support, we implemented an InfoEd test environment to ensure safer adoption of new enhancements and training sessions. In November we went through a major upgrade, implementing the latest InfoEd release (version 11). This latest version has many new features and enhanced capabilities that simplify and enable better proposal development and tracking. As more federal funding programs transition to electronic submissions, we will update and further customize our group and individual training.

Last fall, the Tri-Institutional Collaboration Network (TCN) was established, bringing together resources and expertise from the Sponsored Research Offices of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, The Rockefeller University, and Weill Cornell Medical College, in order to benefit our respective research communities – both investigators and research administrators. Since its inception, the TCN has hosted four events as part of a monthly seminar series which will continue throughout the academic year.  The next event is Grant Writing Workshops for junior investigators and is scheduled for January.

Our 3rd SR-PD ResAdmin forum for our research administrators was held on November 13.  The next forum is scheduled for March 24, 2009.

Hedy Grinspan and Fana Campbell recently joined our Pre-Award area, in the position of Grants Management Specialist. Both Hedy and Fana come with a wealth of experience and look forward to working with you.

Our goals for 2009 include the implementation of a new database which incorporates information from multiple campus sources involved in training grant applications; raising the number of large scale collaborative grant submissions and awards; increasing sponsor diversity; working closely with HOLs and their laboratories; further streamlining efforts to meet sponsors' requirements in order to maximize compliance while minimizing unnecessary burden on investigators; and enhancing training and outreach efforts.

We encourage you to take advantage of our existing and growing services and resources and wish you a healthy and productive year!
