2010 Summer News Bulletin

As we enter the summer season, SR-PD continues to focus on daily research administration efforts, application submissions, improvement of services, and development of new resources and strategic objectives. Our semi-annual News Bulletin highlights recent key accomplishments, and plans for the rest of the year.

We are pleased to announce a new feature of our News Bulletin, which will now include a summary of submissions and awards in the past six months. This new section will be added to future editions of the SR-PD News Bulletin. From January through June 2010, 141 grant applications were submitted through SR-PD, 98 to public and 43 to private sponsors (6% large collaborations, 59% single investigator, 34% training/fellowships and 1% instrumentation). During the same period, 59 awards have been made, 26 from public and 33 from private sponsors (19% large collaborations, 45% single investigator, 34% training/fellowships, and 2% instrumentation).

SR-PD has been very busy administering awards from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 (details in Newswire article).  Since our last News Bulletin, ARRA submissions from RU have increased to 149, resulting in 44 Federal grants and supplemental awards (which brings our total ARRA funding to over $28 million). The awards, which are a significant fraction of the overall RU sponsored projects, support new and ongoing work in basic and clinical research, instrumentation and training.  These ARRA grants continue to require extensive reporting and compliance monitoring. SR-PD has taken a leading role in the reporting coordination and submission of the ARRA quarterly progress reports, and is working closely with PIs and RU offices participating in this process; the fourth reporting period was completed July 14, 2010.

With recent upgrades to InfoEd (University's online proposal management environment) and to Grants.gov, submission capabilities are increasing and, in addition to the NIH, investigators can now submit electronic applications to the DOD, NSF and DOE, and other federal agencies will be added soon. We are continuing to implement IT solutions for streamlined award management and reporting, and more InfoEd-driven, user-friendly tools are being explored for the coming year.

SR-PD continues to develop its website and add resources in response to requests and emerging needs. For example, boilerplates for NIH Institutional Resources and Data Sharing Plan have been updated in the past six months. To help investigators with the recently restructured NIH application format, we have compiled useful resources for preparing applications (NIH Restructured Applications: Tips & Resources). In addition, a Non-US Citizen Funding Resources page, which lists funding opportunities for foreign investigators, and a Budget Justification page, which provides guidance for NIH applications with modular and non-modular budgets, are now available. Tips Highlights are sent to RU researchers and administrators every two weeks, and are posted on our Tips Corner

We have recently launched a Training Area to facilitate applications for new external funding for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral trainees (e.g. from NIH, NSF, and other sponsors).  Working closely with the Dean's Office, this new SR-PD initiative is designed to streamline efforts and offer specialized expertise in pre- and post- award coordination of training applications and awards. SR-PD's Kate Ross has been busy in recent months gathering information to build relevant and useful resources, and supporting new training applications.

During the 2010 academic year, the Tri-Institutional Collaboration Network (TCN) has expanded its reach through a growing TCN website and successful seminar series. The TCN has hosted four grant writing events as part of its monthly seminar series, in addition to special seminars on NIH Policy & Practice presented by NIH/Office of Extramural Research representatives, Responsible Conduct of Research for Research Administrators, and current challenges such as the Impact of ARRA Funding on Academic Research Administration. Almost 900 members of our three institutions, including junior and senior faculty, as well as administrators and managers, participated in the 2010 workshops, and this monthly series will continue in the 2011 academic year.  We welcome your suggestions for future topics and speakers, and new online content that would be of interest to the tri-institutional community.

We are happy to announce the newest SR-PD members, Rebecca Kelley and Mukul Mathur who recently joined our Pre-Award area, in the position of Grants Management Specialists, and they look forward to working with you.

Our goals for the remainder of 2010 include further expansion of our new training area; increasing the number of large scale collaborative grant submissions and awards as well as sponsor diversity; working closely with HOLs and their laboratories and resuming portfolio reviews; adopting a feedback instrument to track new research funding needs and priorities; further streamlining efforts across campus units to better meet sponsor's compliance requirements while decreasing burden on investigators; enhancing training and outreach offerings with new resources such as video/presentation library and sample proposals; evaluating emerging funding search solutions; and working with InfoEd and RU IT to improve the robustness and redundancy capabilities of RU's InfoEd environment.

We encourage you to take advantage of our services and resources, and wish you a healthy and productive summer!
