2010 Winter News Bulletin
In preparing for the New Year, The Rockefeller University's Office of Sponsored Research and Program Development (SR-PD) reflects on the activities of the past year, including daily research administration, application submissions, improvement of services, and development of new resources. Here are some highlights of key accomplishments of the past six months, and our plans for the year ahead.
SR-PD has been actively involved in managing the recent awards from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 (details in Newswire article); of the 120 RU submissions for ARRA funding so far, RU investigators have been awarded 41 federal grants and supplemental awards (total of about $27 million) for new and ongoing projects in basic and clinical research, and training. These ARRA grants have extensive reporting requirements, and SR-PD is working closely with PIs and other RU offices to ensure the timely and accurate submission of the quarterly progress reports; the second ARRA reporting period was just completed on January 10, 2010.
InfoEd (University's online proposal management environment) continues to be the main platform for e-submissions to the NIH. In preparation for the new NIH application forms and instructions (for submission deadlines on/after January 25, 2010) the system has been upgraded to accommodate new e-forms, as well as the ability to submit electronically to other federal agencies accepting applications through Grants.gov (e.g. Department of Defense, National Science Foundation).
In response to recent federal policy changes, SR-PD continues to add new -- e.g. RCR, new NIH Institutional Resources section, Scientific Workforce Diversity -- and update earlier boilerplates, which are designed to assist PIs in preparing their proposals.
In October 2009, SR-PD coordinated a site visit by NYSTEM Program Officials to review the progress of the institutional Instrumentation award (M. Young, PI) that funded the recent purchases of the FACS AriaII Cell Sorter for the Flow Cytometry Resource Center, and the Olympus Multiphoton System for the Bio-Imaging Resource Center. Contributors included investigators/users and Resource Center Directors.
The Tri-Institutional Collaboration Network (TCN) kicked off the 2009-2010 academic year with Grant Writing Workshops for Career Development Awards on September 15-16, 2009, and Write Winning Grants on November 17, 2009. In December 2009, RU hosted a discussion on the Impact of ARRA Funding on Academic Research Administration. In addition to co-organizing these events, SR-PD supported the participation of 58 researchers from the University at the three workshops. Check the TCN website for future events as well as other tri-institutional information.
SR-PD is about to launch a Training Program initiative to facilitate applications for new external funding for graduate and post-graduate training (e.g. from NIH, NSF, other sponsors). Working closely with the Dean's Office, this new SR-PD program will work towards streamlining efforts and offering specialized expertise in pre- and post-award coordination of training applications and awards. Maura Gilmartin has been busy in recent months gathering training information and building a relevant and useful program.
We held our 6th SR-PD ResAdmin Forum on October 15, 2009, which featured topics on the new submission requirements from the NIH and NSF announced last Fall, as well as ARRA-related issues. The 7th SR-PD ResAdmin Forum is scheduled for March 2010.
Robert Giliberto recently joined our Pre-Award area in the position of Grants Management Specialist. Robert comes with a wealth of experience and looks forward to working with you.

Along with growing sponsor diversity, the number of large scale collaborative and other grant submissions have significantly increased in the past year, and we continue to expand our strategic capabilities, working closely with HOLs and their laboratories, as well as with other administrative units on campus and external sponsors. To overcome current challenges and be prepared to capitalize on new opportunities, we remain committed to sustaining and broadening our services via dynamic solutions.
We encourage you to take advantage of our resources and wish you a healthy and productive year!
