2012 Winter News Bulletin

As we move forward into 2012, this Winter edition of the SR-PD News Bulletin highlights our recent efforts and summarizes future plans.

Our data for the 2011 calendar year indicate that The Rockefeller University (RU) overall sponsored research submission volume is similar to the 2010 volume, sustaining the increase that followed the ARRA period. From January to December 2011, 361 grant applications were submitted through SR-PD, 191 to public and 170 to private sponsors (22% Collaborative/Shared Resources, 36% Single PI, 41% Career/Fellowships, and 1% Other). Since January 2011, the University received 110 awards: 60 from public and 50 from private sponsors (24% Collaborative/Shared Resources, 39% Single PI, 35% Career/Fellowships, 1% Equipment, 1% Other).

In response to users’ feedback and growing needs, the SR-PD website has expanded further in the past year, featuring new sections and resources, as well as improved and reorganized ‘old’ sections.   An increase of over 22% in the number of visits to SR-PD webpages between 2010 and 2011 (21,612 and 26,445 respectively) indicates its usefulness and relevance.  The annual review  of our Routing Form was completed in early December and has been in effect since January 1, 2012.

Recent SR-PD outreach highlights on campus include ResAdmin Forums that focused on sponsors' and institutional updates such as use of the new Adobe Forms B2 forms for grant submissions, Public Access policy, issues of Salary and Efforts on grants and more.  Nearly 30 RU research administrators attended our Forums in the past year, and responses to our post-forum evaluation surveys have provided ideas for future presentations – Thank You! Beginning in the spring, SR-PD members contributed to 13 HR orientations, presenting an overview of our services to new  RU research employees. Additional SR-PD training and outreach efforts featured individual and team InfoEd tutorials, customized grant writing tutorials to laboratories, as well as grants-centered tutorials tailored to the needs of our Clinical Scholars, Postdoctoral Associates and Fellows, and Graduate Fellows, altogether involving more than 90 participants.

Upcoming changes in the HHS Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI) policy are due to be implemented on campuses across the nation by August 2012. RU is in the process of creating implementation plans to comply with the revised regulations here on campus, so stay tuned for additional details in the coming months. See the latest edition of the SR-PD Spotlight for a summary of the modifications to the HHS regulations.

The Tri-Institutional Collaboration Network (TCN) kicked off the 2012 academic year with Career Development & Training Award Workshop  in October, followed by Research, Animals, and Ethics in November and Proposal Development Workshop in December.  Over 220 members of the Tri-Institutional community attended these TCN events. Participants included junior and senior faculty, administrators, and managers, and the workshops were well received. Future events will focus on Writing for Biomedical Publication, Export Controls, DOD Funding, Social Networking and other topics. Your ideas for new events are welcome!

We are happy to announce the newest SR-PD member, Jim Keller, and returning member Maura Gilmartin, to our Pre-Award area.  Both are experienced in grants administration and ready to work with you.

Going forward, SR-PD is focusing on implementing new cost-effective technological solutions that promise to improve and extend our services. We recently embarked on significant upgrades to InfoEd, our system-to-system submission platform.  New functionalities will include a single sign-on feature, streamlined with the University’s IT sign-on, thereby enabling the use of a uniform password across environments and establishing an easier access to users’ grant information. The upcoming launch of InfoEd’s Enterprise Staging Area will integrate InfoEd data with other RU systems and offer user-friendly and reliable profile management. A major InfoEd hardware overhaul will increase the application servers’ security, robustness, speed, and overall performance. Working with RU-IT, we intend to provide a mobile-friendly version of our weekly funding alerts, our own web-based funding database, as well as other popular SR-PD online resources (as measured by visits and downloads). In addition, the SR-PD Advisory Board will convene in February to evaluate and provide feedback on SR-PD services, resources, and strategic priorities.

Stop by the SR-PD Office to check out our newly designed Bulletin Board, and continue to take advantage of our other services and resources.

We wish you a healthy and productive New Year!
