2011 Summer News Bulletin

This latest edition of the SR-PD News Bulletin highlights some of our ongoing efforts and plans to develop new resources and strategies to benefit our research community.

The first six months of our 2011 statistics suggest a growth in submission volume that is similar to the post-ARRA increase experienced in 2010. From January to June 2011, 159 grant applications were submitted through SR-PD, 89 to public and 70 to private sponsors (35% Collaborative/Shared Resources, 29% Single PI, and 36% Career/Fellowships). Since January 2011, the University received 59 awards: 34 from public and 25 from private sponsors (27% Collaborative/Shared Resources, 31% Single PI, and 42% Career/Fellowships).

To meet growing needs and increasingly specialized requirements in the sponsored research realm, SR-PD has refocused its functional areas. In addition to Pre-Award, Post-Award, and Program Development, we launched a Training & Fellowships area. Following this reorganization and feedback from a user survey that we administered in early 2011, our home page has been redesigned to reflect our 4-prong modular approach and to enable easy navigation and retrieval of information. A new Post-Award page focuses on issues such as Transfers, Extensions, Institutional Reporting and Closeouts (more in the SR-PD Spotlight). Responding to recent revisions in NSF, NIH and in other sponsors' policies, we updated our Boilerplates and created a Selected Policy Alerts and Updates page that summarizes important announcements.

In the area of electronic submission, InfoEd, RU online proposal management platform, continues to make advancements in order to satisfy existing and new submission requirements, and to provide better processes and functionalities to our users. A critical InfoEd environment overhaul is planned for Fiscal Year 2012 in order to increase its robustness, speed, and overall performance.

As the ARRA era is winding down, the 7th and 8th reporting periods were completed in April 2011 and July 2011, respectively.  The July quarterly report will be the final one for most of the ARRA awards at Rockefeller. SR-PD has been closely monitoring the ongoing debate on extending ARRA reporting requirements to all federal research spending, and is looking for cost-effective and burden-reducing tracking solutions.

The Tri-Institutional Collaboration Network (TCN) continues to diversify its scope of activities. Since January, the TCN monthly series has hosted five workshops, focusing on Tri-Institutional Core Facilities, Non-Federal Funding, Grant Writing, STAR METRICS (for tracking federal R&D investments and outcomes), and Research Administration Certification.  During the 2011 academic year, over 500 members of the Tri-Institutional community attended the TCN events. Participants included junior and senior faculty, administrators, and managers, and they generally reported high satisfaction. The program for the 2012 academic year is expected to address federal and international resources for collaborative projects, conflict of interest issues, export controls, and other strategic areas impacting academic researchers.

SR-PD’s 9th ResAdmin Forum last March highlighted major NIH and NSF policy updates and featured an overview of Responsible Conduct in Research requirements, as well as information on other issues.  Our small-group InfoEd tutorials for NIH fellowship and career award applicants introduced last fall have been well received by the participants.  Additionally, this spring we began to offer grant seeking and writing tutorials to individual labs, and participate in the University's HR new employee orientations, where we provide an overview of our services and resources.
