2012 Summer News Bulletin

This edition of the SR-PD News Bulletin highlights progress on our recent endeavors and plans to sustain and improve our sponsored research administration support.

From January through June 2012, 188 grant applications were submitted through SR-PD, 106 to public and 82 to private sponsors (36% Collaborative/Multi-PI, 36% Single PI, and 28% Career/Fellowships). The University received 65 new and competing awards during this period, 28 from public and 37 from private sponsors (17% Collaborative/Multi-PI, 25% Single PI, 57% Career/Fellowships, and 1% Other-NonResearch).

As reported in our July Spotlight, significant updates in Electronic Research Administration (ERA) resources have kept SR-PD busy since early 2012, especially with the major overhaul of InfoEd, the University's online proposal management environment. Working with InfoEd and RU-IT, a new server infrastructure was launched in the spring and this challenging operation has increased InfoEd robustness and speed, and provides better security, and overall performance. A new SPIN (funding search engine) interface, an improved budget development tool, system-generated deliverable reminders, and import/export of subaward budgets, are among other InfoEd enhancements with direct benefits to investigators and administrators.

Search capabilities for funding opportunities have vastly expanded with our new and improved COS Pivot platform that, as of June 30, 2012, replaced the Community of Science (COS) tool. While the earlier COS Funding Opportunities module was limited to grant seeking features, the next-generation COS Pivot also offers a broad, integrated framework that connects domestic and global research opportunities, funding resources, and people. Co-sponsored with the Rita & Frits Markus Library, COS Pivot has all the previous COS functionalities, along with new tools for finding collaborators, sharing funding information, and managing one's funding.

Since our Winter News edition last January, SR-PD hosted two ResAdmin Forums, which focused on the revised Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI) regulation implementation required by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), an overview of University Resource Centers, a funding search tutorial and a range of other topics. Over 70 research administrators attended these Forums. SR-PD has contributed to the Human Resources new employee orientations, where we outline SR-PD services, policies and procedures. During this period we provided InfoEd training (individual and group) and grant tutorials, tailored to the needs of our faculty members, Clinical Scholars, Postdoctoral Associates and Fellows, Graduate Fellows, and other potential sponsored research grants applicants. Altogether, in the past 6 months, SR-PD members offered guidance and training in 38 different sessions.

The Tri-Institutional Collaboration Network (TCN) kicked 2012 off with Writing for Biomedical Publications in January, followed by Export Controls in February, Navigating the New Landscape for Animal Activism in March, DOD Biomedical Research Funding in April, Social Media in Research in May and NYC Biosciences and Innovation Initiatives in June. Close to 500 members of the Tri-Institutional community benefited from TCN events in the past 6 months. Participants consisted of junior and senior faculty, administrators, and managers, and the workshops were well received.

Revised Routing Form

With RU-IT’s ongoing support, more InfoEd improvements are coming up this summer, starting with a substantial addition of Enterprise Staging Area (ESA) and Single Sign On (SSO) functionalities, and an InfoEd version upgrade. ESA will enable seamless creation and maintenance of accounts for all InfoEd users at RU by interfacing with institutional databases, and SSO will integrate the InfoEd system with the University’s network so that users will no longer need to maintain a separate InfoEd login. These enhancements, together with the anticipated InfoEd version upgrade, will enable us to keep up with relevant ERA advancements, boost usability and convenience for our users, and further streamline the administration of the system.

SR-PD is actively monitoring and preparing for new electronic tools created by sponsors, such as the new NIH Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI) eRA Commons capabilities, and the new Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR) for NIH eSNAP awards. This latter tool is expected to be adopted by and streamline reporting requirements across all federal sponsors. Our evaluations of collaborative management tools to support researchers engaged in large-scale, multi-PI, multi-institutional projects, and of mobile solutions for our weekly funding alerts and most-visited SR-PD web pages are moving forward. We encourage you to take advantage of our services and resources and to share with us your needs and ideas.

Have a healthy and productive summer!
